Conservationists and celebrities urge UK government to support a ban on peat sales for gardening, as a Private Members' Bill aims to end peat compost sales by 2024.

Conservationists and celebrities are urging the UK government to support a ban on the sale of peat for gardening purposes, as a Private Members' Bill to ban horticultural peat sales is set to be debated in the House of Commons. The bill aims to deliver on the government's pledge to end the sale of peat compost and peat-containing products by 2024. Peatlands, crucial for wildlife and climate change efforts, have been damaged by overgrazing, burning, and extraction for compost usage, leading to the release of 31 million tonnes of CO2 since 1990.
