Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly is sending her deputy, David Morrison, to China to help improve strained relations between the two nations. Ottawa aims to "normalize bilateral ties with China" and Morrison's trip is part of this effort. Relations between Canada and China have been tense due to incidents such as the arrest of a senior Chinese telecom executive in Vancouver in 2018 and Beijing's subsequent detention of two Canadians on espionage charges.
