The NRL backs referee Gerard Sutton amidst Knights coach Adam O'Brien's criticism of Sutton's performance in Newcastle's 22-20 loss to Sydney Roosters. O'Brien was critical of ruck speed and the lack of action taken when Knights' Kalyn Ponga appeared to be held down during a line break. NRL head of elite competitions, Graham Annesley, has publicly supported Sutton.
