Lockheed Martin has secured a $17bn contract to develop the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) for the US Missile Defense Agency, protecting the US from intercontinental ballistic missile threats. The contract will modernize the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense program, with the US planning to buy 20 interceptors for deployment at Fort Greely, Alaska. The NGI aims to counter long-range ballistic missile threats from rogue nations and is expected to be operational by 2028.
