Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has criticized the Nigerian government for its emphasis on prosecuting popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, rather than focusing on politicians who siphon public funds. Bobrisky received a six-month prison sentence for naira abuse but social commentator Reno Omokri suggested the government's true intention may have been to suppress the LGBTQ+ community. Omokri argued that a direct move against the LGBTQ+ community could earn Nigeria "the whip of the Western powers" given the economic support Western nations provide.
