Communities Minister Gordon Lyons plans to introduce legislation in Northern Ireland with a 30-year timeframe for defective building claims, similar to England and Wales.
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons announces plans to introduce legislation in line with England and Wales to increase the time limit for owners to bring compensation claims for defective buildings, following the controversy around the Victoria Square apartments in Belfast where residents were forced to leave their homes due to safety concerns. Currently, claims in Northern Ireland must be made within six years of a building being completed, while England and Wales have a 30-year timeframe. The proposed legislation aims to provide the same protection for citizens in Northern Ireland as in the rest of the UK.
