China invests in Sahara Desert mine, builds 6,000-km railway to reduce Australian iron ore dependence.

China is investing in a Sahara Desert mine to reduce its dependence on Australian iron ore by building a 6,000-km railway line across the Algerian desert to control the Gâra-Djebilet mine, which has reserves of 3.5 billion tonnes. This move comes as China is the world's largest steel producer, with about 70% of its iron ore coming from Australia. The railway line is part of a $36 billion deal signed last year between Algeria and China to develop the mining sector and promote trade.
