2,305 billion tonnes of carbon stored in soil inorganic carbon globally, exceeding vegetation carbon.
A study published in Science journal reveals that soil inorganic carbon (SIC), a previously underestimated component of soil carbon, stores 2,305 billion tonnes of carbon in the top two meters of soil globally. This is more than five times the carbon found in all vegetation. SIC, often calcium carbonate, is more prevalent in arid regions with infertile soils, challenging the long-held view of its insignificance.
