French priest Joannes Rivoire, accused of sexually abusing Inuit children in Nunavut, Canada, has died after a long illness. Rivoire faced allegations of abuse dating back to the 1960s and 1970s while working in the territory, mostly in Arviat and Naujaat. He had been sought for extradition by the Inuit community and Canadian authorities since the 1990s. Rivoire had denied the allegations and refused to return to Canada for trial. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the religious organization to which Rivoire belonged, will continue to support the complainants and their families in the healing process.
