617 active drilling rigs in US, down 3 from last week and 134 from last year (Baker Hughes)
The number of active drilling rigs in the U.S. fell this week to 617, down by 3 from the previous week and by 134 from a year ago, according to Houston-based oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The decline is attributed to 506 oil rigs (down by 2) and 109 gas rigs (down by 1). The Permian Basin in western Texas and eastern New Mexico remains the largest source of shale oil production growth in the U.S.
