67-year-old Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, faces a potential death sentence after being accused of swindling $12.5bn from Saigon Commercial Bank over a decade. Lan and 85 others are charged with bribery, abuse of power, appropriation, and violations of banking law in one of the largest corruption cases in history, with estimated damages of $27bn. The case is part of a national corruption crackdown in Vietnam that has affected numerous officials and members of the nation's business elite.
