Supreme Court of Canada rules federal government broke 1877 land promise to Blood Tribe, but no damages can be sued.
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the federal government dishonorably broke a 1877 land promise to the Blood Tribe, an Indigenous community in Alberta, shortchanging them by 162.5 square miles. Although the court determined the Crown breached the treaty provisions, the Blood Tribe cannot sue for damages due to a six-year time limit. The ruling aims to promote reconciliation and restore the nation-to-nation relationship between the tribe and the Crown.
