New York City Council has approved bills requiring the FDNY to provide EMTs with bulletproof vests and regular self-defense training. The move comes after a fourfold surge in attacks on EMTs in recent years, with 363 reported incidents in 2022. The bills, authored by Minority Leader Joseph Borelli, will now be sent to Mayor Eric Adams for final approval.
