UK NGO Earthsight accuses H&M and Zara of sourcing "sustainable" cotton linked to deforestation, land-grabbing, and human rights abuses in Brazil's Cerrado region.

UK NGO Earthsight has accused H&M and Zara of sourcing cotton from Brazilian farms linked to deforestation, land-grabbing, and human rights abuses in Brazil's Cerrado region. The investigation found that 800,000 tonnes of cotton from these farms were certified "sustainable" by Better Cotton, which is used by H&M and Zara. The Cerrado, a biodiversity hotspot, has seen a 44% increase in deforestation alerts in 2023.
