2023 saw a 2% increase in global coal power capacity, the highest annual growth since 2016, driven mainly by new builds in China and delayed decommissioning elsewhere, according to Global Energy Monitor. China accounted for around two-thirds of the increase, followed by Indonesia and India. Despite an increase in renewable energy, 70 gigawatts of new coal power capacity were commissioned worldwide in 2023.
