2010: Post Office MD David Smith apologizes for celebrating after pregnant subpostmistress Seema Misra, later proven innocent, was jailed.
Former Post Office managing director David Smith has apologised for celebrating after a pregnant subpostmistress was jailed. Smith admitted to causing "substantial distress" by telling Post Office staff that the conviction of Seema Misra was "brilliant news". Misra, who was accused of stealing £74,000, was handed a 15-month prison sentence in 2010 and was eight weeks pregnant at the time. Her conviction was later quashed by the Court of Appeal in 2021.
