Neuroscientists at Japan's RIKEN Center for Brain Science discovered neural circuitry in the spinal cord that facilitates brain-independent motor learning and memory. Two key groups of spinal cord neurons were identified, one for new adaptive learning and the other for recalling learned adaptations. This finding could aid in developing treatments for spinal cord injuries by focusing on the spinal cord's ability to create independent memories.
