India seals Myanmar border, ends Free Movement Regime due to national security concerns.

India has sealed its Myanmar border, dividing families and disrupting trade in the northeast region. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that the decision to fence the Indo-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Regime (FMR) was taken due to the government's top priority on national security. Thousands of people from Myanmar have taken refuge in northeastern states, particularly Mizoram, since the military coup in February 2021. The move has strained relations between the border communities, who have historically operated as a single village.
