Gujarat state government requires Hindus to seek permission for converting to Buddhism, Sikhism, or Jainism.

Gujarat's state government has clarified that Buddhism is a separate religion and that Hindus must seek permission from the District Magistrate for converting to Buddhism, Sikhism, or Jainism. The Gujarat Home Department issued a circular on April 8, stating that applications for conversion to Buddhism were not being made according to the rules. The act of conversion without permission is against the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act 2003, which considers Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism as separate religions from Hinduism.
