Galway University Hospital implemented changes following an increase in newborn head injuries in 2022. Nine babies suffered subgaleal haemorrhages, a form of bleeding under the scalp associated with difficult births. The hospital fully implemented a series of recommendations from a review, including changes in delivery practices. Subgaleal haemorrhage can lead to severe complications and death, and is mostly linked to vacuum-assisted delivery, also called ventouse delivery.
