A UCLA Health analysis found that deaths of despair (suicide, drug overdose, and alcoholic liver disease) among middle-aged Black Americans surpassed those of white Americans in 2022. Native Americans also had a higher rate than both Black and white Americans. The study published in the JAMA Psychiatry journal challenges the narrative that "deaths of despair" primarily affected white Americans.
