Taiwanese dumpling chain Din Tai Fung fined $4m for underpaying 17 workers in Sydney and Melbourne from 2014 to 2018.

Taiwanese dumpling chain Din Tai Fung has been fined $4m by the Federal Court for deliberately underpaying 17 workers at its Sydney and Melbourne restaurants. The chain has been ordered to pay $3.89m, while its general manager and HR manager were fined $92,232 and $105,084 respectively. The employees, many of whom were migrant workers, were underpaid minimum rates from 2014 to 2018, with individual underpayments ranging from $2300 to over $50,000. The company went into administration after the Federal Court proceedings began.
