China's Zhang Zhizhen made history by becoming the first player from the Chinese mainland to reach the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, after defeating American Marcos Giron 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The Monte Carlo Masters, an ATP 1000 event, had previously never featured a mainland Chinese player in its main draw. Zhang entered as a replacement for Rafael Nadal, who withdrew due to injury.
