Pope Francis restructures Irish Catholic Church, relocating bishops in Achonry and Killala dioceses.
Pope Francis announces major changes to Irish Catholic Church structures: Two west of Ireland dioceses, Achonry and Killala, will lose their bishops in the most significant change to Irish Church structures in over 900 years. Bishop Paul Dempsey of Achonry will become an Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, while Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin has been appointed as Administrator of Achonry diocese. Bishop John Fleming of Killala will stand down, with Archbishop Francis Duffy of Tuam appointed as Apostolic Administrator sede vacante of the diocese.
