German company HGK Shipping explores the use of remotely controlled ships amid a seafarer shortage. Based in Duisburg, the firm is experimenting with remote navigation from a land-based control center. With dwindling recruitment, CEO Steffen Bauer emphasizes autonomous vessels as the "only solution to survive as an industry". HGK has partnered with Belgian startup Seafar, a leader in autonomous navigation, to address the expected loss of 30% of sailors by 2030.
