Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane presided over the steel cutting ceremony for the first of five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, marking the beginning of production. The FSS with a displacement of 44,000 tonnes will replenish the fleet at sea with fuel, water, ammunition, and stores, enhancing the strategic reach and operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. The contract for the five FSS was signed in August 2023, with scheduled delivery to the Indian Navy beginning mid-2027.
