Mercury NZ to trial self-drive vehicle for worker safety after a 'steam hammer' incident at Rotokawa power station.

Mercury NZ, one of the country's largest electricity providers, will trial a self-drive vehicle for worker safety as part of a $1.15m safety spend agreement with WorkSafe New Zealand. This commitment comes after a 'steam hammer' event at its Rotokawa power station in July 2021, where uncontrolled geothermal steam release could have caused serious harm to workers. WorkSafe investigation revealed plant installation and risk assessment shortcomings, and ineffective communication between onsite and offsite control room personnel.
