Indian Supreme Court examines Centre's control over industrial alcohol regulation amidst states' role in citizen health.

The Indian Supreme Court is questioning the Centre's control over industrial alcohol, asking why states, as custodians of citizens' health, cannot impose regulations and levy fees to prevent misuse, such as in hooch tragedies. A nine-judge constitution bench is examining overlapping powers of the Centre and states in production, manufacturing, supply, and regulation of industrial alcohol. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that during the pandemic, the Centre used its power over industrial alcohol production and distribution to supply oxygen to hospitals and hand sanitizer ingredients.
