10% increase in remote workers leads to 10% drop in CO2 emissions, but reduces transit fare revenue by $3.7bn nationally, according to a new study.

Remote work reduces car travel and emissions, yet decreases public transit revenues, according to a new study by University of Florida, MIT, and Peking University. A 10% increase in remote workers leads to a 10% drop in CO2 emissions, due to fewer car trips, but also reduces transit fare revenue by $3.7bn nationally (27% drop). The study shows cities can meet sustainability goals by promoting remote work, with 14% of workforce exclusively working from home, and potentially up to 50% working remotely at least part-time.
