Finland's Vantaa Energy is planning the world's largest seasonal heat storage system, a 90 GWh thermal energy storage. The underground heat storage system, the size of two Madison Square Gardens, will have a total capacity corresponding to a medium-sized Finnish city's annual heating demand. The system's operating principle is to store heat in underground caverns for use in heating buildings via the district heating network.
