Australian researchers discover unusual radio pulses with rapid circular polarization from the closest known magnetar, XTE J1810-197.

Australian researchers have detected unprecedented behavior from a nearby previously dormant star, XTE J1810-197, a magnetar with an extremely powerful magnetic field. Using CSIRO's Parkes radio telescope, scientists observed unusual radio pulses from this magnetar, which is the closest known to Earth at 8,000 light years away. Unlike radio signals seen from other magnetars, XTE J1810-197 is emitting enormous amounts of rapidly changing circular polarization, a phenomenon never before observed.
