1969 World Series champion catcher Jerry Grote of the New York Mets passed away at 81.

Jerry Grote, the catcher who helped transform the New York Mets from a perennial loser into the 1969 World Series champion, passed away at age 81. Grote, who played 16 major league seasons, had suffered from heart issues and died in Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute at St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Known for his defense, Grote played 12 seasons for the New York Mets and was part of the team's 1969 championship win.
