Public hearings for a proposed open-cut mine in Victoria raise groundwater contamination concerns.
Public hearings continue on a proposed open-cut mine in Victoria, raising concerns about contaminated mine water potentially polluting groundwater in the southern Mallee region. VHM Ltd, the company behind the mine proposal, has claimed that highly saline groundwater was found 30 metres below the proposed site during years of monitoring, traveling slowly to reach Lake Tyrrell after thousands of years. Environmental groups and grain farmers have opposed the mine, which is currently under investigation by the government.
