5,000-patient study finds beta blockers provide no clear benefits for half of heart attack patients without heart failure.

A landmark trial found that beta blockers, commonly prescribed to heart attack patients, provide no clear benefits for about half of these patients who experience no reduction in the risk of death or further heart attacks. The study involving 5,000 recent heart attack patients in 45 countries discovered that only patients with heart failure benefit from beta blockers, with around 50% of heart attack patients having this condition. These findings may change the way heart attack patients are treated on the NHS, potentially freeing tens of thousands from uncomfortable side effects.
