62-year-old Deryl McKissack, president and CEO of McKissack & McKissack, has transformed her $1,000 startup into a $25 million a year business. The company, founded by her great-great-grandfather Moses, a skilled brick maker who arrived in the US as a slave in 1790, specialises in construction projects, including building the Smithsonian African American Museum of History and Culture and repairing the Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson memorials. Now managed by her twin sister Cheryl, the company has grown over five generations.
