UK government grants extensions to major airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, for installing new scanners that allow increased liquid capacity in hand luggage and no longer require laptops and tablets to be removed. The new scanners use computed tomography, similar to CT scans, and have been implemented worldwide. The decision follows a foiled terror plot in 2006 involving homemade liquid bombs.
