Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer Linda Mthimkhulu was shot dead on 6 April in Dobsonville, Soweto, during a confrontation with South African Police Service (SAPS) officers pursuing her son for reckless driving. Mthimkhulu retrieved her firearm and fired at the officers, who returned fire, fatally wounding her. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the incident.
