Chinese investment in Australia has declined to its second-lowest level in 18 years, according to a KPMG and University of Sydney report. Direct investment dropped 37% to $892m in 2023, largely due to the shift in Chinese Belt and Road investments towards countries participating in President Xi Jinping's initiative. Investment in industries such as commercial real estate and mining have also declined.
