White Earth Tribal Chairman Michael Fairbanks outlined land recovery goals in the State of the Nation address, including efforts to regain control over the White Earth State Forest and Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. The tribe signed an MOA with U.S. Fish & Wildlife and is integrating its conservation code into theirs. Public Law 93-638 grants tribes authority to contract with the federal government for programs serving tribal members. White Earth leadership is advocating for the state to transfer control over certain lands.
