3 people were injured during Greece's first major wildfire of 2024 which broke out on Crete island in southern Greece. The fire erupted in a forested area on the outskirts of Ierapetra city and was fanned by winds up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. About 300 residents of four villages were evacuated as a precaution, while 169 firefighters and four water-dropping helicopters tackled the blaze.
