Christchurch's Cathedral rebuild may be indefinitely postponed if $30m funding isn't secured by August, according to Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited (CCRL). The iconic building, damaged in the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, had its initial cost of restoration rise from $104m in 2017 to $248m, with a funding gap of $114m. The cathedral's reinstatement is seen as crucial for the city's recovery, but the financial pressure on trust, church, city, and central government may make resolving the funding issue challenging.
