40-45 years: Austrian glaciers to be largely "ice-free" due to rapid recession.

Austrian glaciers are rapidly receding, with experts predicting the country will be largely "ice-free" within 40 to 45 years. All but one of the 93 glaciers measured by the Austrian Alpine Club experienced recession in 2022-2023, with an average shrinkage of 23.9 meters (78 feet). The World Meteorological Organization reports that major glaciers worldwide have suffered the largest loss of ice since records began in 1950.
