1 in 8 women report mistreatment during childbirth, including being ignored, shouted at, or having providers threaten treatment, according to a study from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, is the first to use multi-state data to examine mistreatment in the US. Negative experiences during childbirth can have long-term consequences, including post-traumatic stress disorder, negative body image, feelings of dehumanization, and changes in future reproductive decisions.
