South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal overruled SSA, allowing Independent Media to publish leaked report on US perceptions of the ANC, upholding press freedom and transparency.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in South Africa overruled a State Security Agency (SSA) ruling that barred Independent Newspapers from publishing details of a leaked report on US perceptions of the ANC. The SCA found that the SSA did not observe good faith in the ex parte proceedings that interdicted Independent and journalist Thabo Makwakwa from publishing any details of the report. The court's ruling now allows Independent Media to publish the contents of the leaked SSA report, marking a victory for press freedom and transparency.
