Salzburg Festival artistic director, Markus Hinterhäuser, secures a third 5-year term, extending his tenure in a leading European cultural role to the longest since Herbert von Karajan's 1956-89 reign. Hinterhäuser, born in Italy, has served as Salzburg's director of concerts (2007-11) and interim artistic director (2011). This contract through 2031 has a provision for either side to terminate it on September 30, 2029.
