New York City agrees to pay $17.5m to settle lawsuit over hijab removal during mug shots.
New York City has agreed to pay $17.5m to settle a lawsuit filed by two Muslim women who were forced to remove their hijabs for mug shots after their arrests. The class-action lawsuit, filed in 2018, claimed that the practice violated religious freedom and left the women feeling exposed and violated. In 2020, the police department changed its policy, allowing arrested individuals to keep their religious head coverings on for mug shots with limited exceptions. The financial settlement requires approval by a Manhattan federal court judge.
