Alberta's Court of Appeal has dismissed a coal company's request for $190 million in compensation over government policies to phase out coal power. Altius Royalty Corp argued that federal and provincial moves to end coal-fired power over climate and health concerns were a type of expropriation. However, the judges ruled that such benefits accrue to the public, not the state, and therefore Altius was not entitled to compensation.
