A French couple in Nice has been given a one-year suspended sentence and permanently banned from owning pets after authorities discovered over 100 dehydrated and malnourished cats and dogs in their apartment. The 68-year-old woman and her 52-year-old partner were also ordered to pay €150,000 ($162,000) in damages to animal welfare associations. The couple, who were found guilty of animal abandonment, were living in squalor with their 159 cats and seven dogs, with the animals in very poor health.
