Senegal swears in Africa’s youngest elected leader as president in a dramatic prison-to-palace rise.

44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye has become Senegal's youngest president, pledging systemic change, greater sovereignty, and calm after years of turmoil. Faye, who has never held an elected office before, won the March 24 election with 54.3% of the vote. Faye's inauguration was attended by several African heads of state, including Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leaders from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
