2023 tropical forest loss decreased 9% from 2022, but global deforestation remains high and threatens 2030 goal.
2023 tropical forest loss decreased 9% vs 2022, but threats to forests persist. The world lost approximately 37,000 sq km of tropical primary forest in 2023, an area the size of Switzerland and larger than the US state of Montana. Despite significant reductions in Brazil and Colombia, global forest destruction remains high, and the world is falling short of its goal to end deforestation by 2030, as per an analysis by Global Forest Watch monitoring project.
